1998 Ranger Boats Sport Series R77(.) Prices and Specs Select Option Packages Below. Downrigger - Manual. Storage Tackle Center - Six Drawer. Transom Live Well. GALLEY Bar / Console. Fish Box - Insulated 10 cu. Ice Maker 20 lbs. I fished out of a Ranger R72 (1995) for over five years. The R70 is the same boat without the second console. Mine had a Merc 115 on it and could have used more power than that. For a first boat it will work but it doesn't compare to an 18-19' boat with a 150 motor. If i had to do it all over again I would have gone a little bigger!

Ranger Boats hull quality?Posted by Ice Cream Sammich on 3/7/15 at 7:45 pm
I know, I know, its a Ranger so its gotta be great, but hear me out.
My FIL was about to buy a Ranger Z522 from ole boy's shop on Florida in Denham Springs, but head some bad news today. He was at his camp on Toldeo talking to a fiberglass shop owner and he told my FIL that the brand new hulls are cracking very easily when only bumping and working their way through/around logs/stumps. He said that they crack long ways and its not uncommon to see a 3-4' crack.
FIL called another boat repair shop in Leesville and a guy there told him the same thing.
I cannot find shite about this online and my FIL is now second guessing his soon to be purchase. He used to fish tourneys years and years ago in nothing but Rangers, but hasn't owned one in a decade.
If anybody has any information, please post it.

Nothing in the Hull Truth?
That'd be my first stop.

Also, Bass Pro owns them now.
Idk if that has had any bearing on this, I doubt it.

I spoke to the owner of the shop on Florida. They own Ranger in name only. Said not a single thing has changed since the ownership changed hands. Matter a fact, said that it has changed hands half a dozen times in the last 10 years and nobody has been any the wiser.

Thats why he was going to buy one. He has never had a problem in the past, and would have bought last week, but wasn't heading directly back home.
I keep volunteering to store it for him, but he wont take me up on my offer

I went to the boat show in New Orleans today. Looked at Ranger, Blackjack and several others. Wasn't that great of a show to me. I was impressed with the Skeeter. Yamaha owns them now. Mercury owns whaler I think and I want to see the new 21 Montauk but there were no Whalers at the NO show.

If he can confirm the rumors, he is going to look at Skeeter and others. However, he is nostalgic about Ranger and for good reasons.

IF he doesn't want to go with Ranger, tell him to look at Legend boats. That would be my first choice.

I think most all of them have moved to a lifetime warranty. I know the Blackjack and Skeeter have lifetime for the first owner.

He absolutely wants a Ranger, if the hull rumors aren't true. If he doesn't pull the trigger soon, I'll talk to him about Legend.
IB, he already has a Blue Fin for marsh and bay fishing. Looking for a pure bass boat. I do love the new Black Jack boats though.

Guys at work fish several tourneys and they all switched to phoenix boats. They each had a ranger, champion, and skeeter. All ended up with a phoenix. They love em

I would have your dad check out Legend boats if he is wanting to drop that kind of cash on a boat.
Ranger isn't the same rig that made it a house hold name back in the day.
Several other options that are better and a little cheaper.

Legend is the best looking boat made IMO. I'm sure the quality is great too. Their website has some amazing builds.

Nah, they wouldn't.
My brother came very close to buying a Legend. I own a Ranger, but would take a Legend any day. We all agree they are great boats.

Guys around here are switching from Ranger and Triton to Phoenix. I live close to Guntersville and you see more and more Phoenix boats on the road headed to the lake.

Thanks for the recs, y'all. I'll tell him to check out Legend and Phoenix too. I just don't see the Ranger rumors to be true, but it scared him since he was days away from writing a check.

Has he looked into Bass Cat boats? I am biased but I think that is one of the best boats out there and has been for many many years.
