Age is a very significant rating factor, especially for young drivers. Between the most expensive. State Farm’s Drive Safe and Save program uses a telematics device or your car’s OnStar system to get real-time data on your driving habits. The better your habits, the more you stand to save.

Is State Farm Drive Safe & Save app worth it?Posted by LSUfootball222 on 6/26/17 at 2:35 pm
Title kind of says it all
Met with my insurance agent last week and she mentioned this device. She said you can save somewhere between 5-50% on you car insurance bill by downloading the app and putting the device in your car. I honestly don't feel like messing with it but my wife seems to want to do it
Anyone have any experience with it? It seems too good to be true

I am saving $104.55 every 6 months with my drive safe and save discount. It fluctuates based on how much and how well I drive though.

i plan on asking my agent this but you may already know. Is it always 'free' or is it only free for the first year or so.
Also, are there any drawbacks? I mean if its free and there is a potential to save even a little bit of money then I guess its worth it.

It's always free and you can only save money.
So I don't see a drawback really.

I work from home, so I can sometimes go days without driving, would that be a positive for this device? Or, do you you have to actively drive and drive safely for this to be beneficial for you?

The only drawback I can find is that if your getting insurance based on low miles (7500 or below) and you get this device and actually drive more miles than that then your rate will go up.
Other than that, I'm trying to find other drawbacks. It just seems to good to be true and I'm wondering why everyone isn't doing it.

It's a retention tool for the agent. Rates have climbed so high that the company developed this gimmick to try to keep customers.
I work for one of their agents so I know.
It saves money, yes. But if you don't have an unlimited data plan, it can cost you more than it saves.
We used to be one of the best companies in the industry but with recent increases and the mandatory 5% hurricane deductible, and changes in leadership, sadly State Farm is just another insurance company now.

If you don't drive a lot you can expect a solid savings.
If you are one of the customers who say 'I drive safe and my rates still go up' then this is your opportunity to prove it and be rewarded for it. Insurance companies can only rate on a limited number of factors, but don't really know what type of driver you are. This gives them that info. IMO, the insurance industry will be moving this direction more rapidly with almost all of the major companies offering some type of telematics device/discount already.

Guess it depends where you live but I found State Farm to be higher than any other insurance company in my area. Was a customer for a over 10 years.

Have you evaluated other insurance companies?
I called around and found SF to be much higher than competitors, without the gimmicky GPS/Accelerometer tracking.

Not directed at State Farm, but I am an insurance broker, and am of the strong opinion that the UBI (usage based insurance) (Progressive's Snapshot, State Farm's Drive Safe and Save, Safeco's Drivesafe, etc) will be mandatory in the next decade or so.
When I was with State Farm (2012-2016), the app sucked, but have heard that there have been recent improvements.
As other posters have said, State Farm is in chaos and is going down in service and up in price, which is a bad combination.

Same here, I was quite shocked how much I saved moving from SF to Progressive.

Yes, I'm sure that's the case with many/most companies. For me, in my state, State Farm offers the best rates and coverage for my home, autos and rental properties. Oddly enough, my rates have gone down over the past two years, even though I had a substantial auto claim in 2015 (stupid, suicidal deer).
As for using one of these tracking and monitoring devices, I don't see the concept being a good idea for me.
